CALGARY — Duct tape isn’t meant to hold together a car. But, I’ve often seen the strong, silver tape (although it now comes in many hues, and even plaid patterns) used in an attempt to mend cracks or keep a bumper skin attached to a vehicle. I saw one the other day on a Mazda where the rear bumper skin was artistically duct taped to the quarter panel.

While not held together with duct tape, this kind of mild bumper skin or fascia damage could likely be repaired instead of replaced. With modern safety systems and sensors now embedded in bumper skins it's important they're properly aligned for everything to work as it should.
While there was at one point a brisk trade in remanufactured bumper skins, many OEMs have lowered their prices, effectively killing off the practice.
