From 1997 through 2002, Kia introduced two models of the Sephia, the hatchback and the sedan. While in some places the hatchback retained the Sephia name, it was known as the Spectra in the United States. Later, the Spectra would overtake the sedan model as well and replace the Kia Sephia. Engines were recreated, and drivers could choose either a 1.5-liter or a 1.8-liter dual overhead cam engine. The second generation saw many more updates throughout its time than the first generation did. The first models of the second generation had more features, particularly the base-level LS. By 2001, the renowned 100,000-mile, 10-year warranty on Kia vehicles premiered, covering Kia Sephia parts such as the powertrain. Kia Sephia cars from model year 2002 and later were rebranded the Kia Spectra, both the sedan and hatchback models. It was the end of the Sephia and the beginning of the Spectra. Aside from a name change, various improvements on the vehicle's interior, exterior, and engine justified a completely new model name.
